Jesus calls together 72 of His disciples, who He pairs up into 36 mission teams of two disciples each. For this important mission, Jesus sets a protocol which has roots in Old Testament prophecy. For example,a similar experience had occurred, when, many years earlier, God had instructed Moses to assemble seventy elders and take them to a meeting tent, where He would speak to them. The Bible says: Taking some of the spirit that was on Moses, He (God) bestowed it on the ‘seventy elders’; and as the Spirit came to ‘rest on them,’ they ‘prophesied’ (Exodus 24:1,9; Numbers 11:16-25).
