33 - 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time
In our homily, the Scholar of the Law is caught up in a religious society, whose religious way of thinking and living have given him an elite status in his religious community. When he asks Jesus, “Who is my neighbor,” Jesus tells him the story of the Good Samaritan. The Parable of the Good Samaritan has its roots in Old Testament Scripture. In the book of 2 Chronicles, chapter 28, Samaria defeated Judah in battle. The anger of the Lord was upon Judah; and, so, God gave the victory to the Samaritans! Coming back from the war, the Samaritans were confronted by Obed, the prophet, about the extreme fury and rage of their actions against Judah! He warned them that their intentions to make slaves of the people of Judah and Jerusalem were making God very angry! So, the leaders of Samaria told the soldiers to leave their captives and the plunder with them. They, then, rose up and took charge of the captives, and using the goods taken in battle, they clothed all of them that were naked. They also gave them sandals, provided them with food and water, and anointed them! Then, they carried all the feeble among them on donkeys and brought them back to their kinsfolk at Jericho!
