34 -16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s homily, we find Martha busily preparing dinner and getting everything ready to serve, while her sister Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to Him and giving Him her undivided attention. One of the things that we see immediately is the position of Jesus regarding the equality of women. In first-century Palestinian, Judaistic tradition, a woman would not assume the position of a disciple sitting at the Master’s feet. Jesus, who fulfilled the law and its traditions (Galatians 5:14) also instituted the Gospel of Grace (Romans 5:20). Therefore, He showed the same concern and kindness to everyone He met: rich or poor, slave or free, male or female (Gal. 3:28-29)! In our story, today, Martha is stressed by her responsibilities and is feeling overworked. As her frustration grows, emotions are running high!
It appears to Martha that Mary is doing nothing and, thus, she is left with all the work!
