36 - 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s story, there is a disturbance in a family, regarding money. Out of the crowd, a voice comes, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me!” But, the answer Jesus gives goes to the heart of the matter, when He says: “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” In today’s turbulent world, there is an undercurrent of anxiety, a fear of the future. We wonder: How are we going to pay all the bills? What about our jobs? Will we be able to endure any layoffs or downsizing? What if someone in our family has an unexpected or extended illness, and we incur substantial medical costs? What about retirement? Will we have enough money in savings? In our lesson, today, Jesus addresses all of these issues. He gives the example of a land owner, who has an unexpectedly, large harvest.
