39 - 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Someone in the crowd asks Jesus, “Lord, Will only ‘a few’ be saved?” Wisely, Jesus avoids a yes or no answer. He simply says to them: “Enter through the narrow gate.” So, what is the narrow gate? What does Jesus mean by this? Imagine an ancient city protected with a large security wall. The enemy is near, and all rush from the outside to get inside the wall before the large security gate is closed! Now, the enemy is approaching quickly, and everyone tries to get in at once; but, there are too many people, carrying too much stuff. Gridlock becomes reality! There is a human traffic jam, of desperate people, crowding and pushing. Some do not make it through the city gate in time and they perish at the hands of the enemy. At the time of Jesus, an enterprising person who has heard the warning might investigates the town’s security wall. He might find a small, secluded narrow gate, perhaps even rusted shut from disuse. Pushing and leaning, he finally opens the door and struggles through, just before the enemy overwhelms him. As a result, he passes safely through the narrow gate . . .
