40 - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today, Jesus has been invited to the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees to dine with him. It is the Sabbath, and the event appears to be an occasion which has been staged to give the Pharisees an opportunity to watch Jesus, so they can gain evidence against Him. They want to catch Him in the very act of breaking a Sabbath law! But instead, Jesus uses this time as a teaching moment! The first principle Jesus teaches them, is about humility. He tells the story of a guest who is attending a wedding banquet, and when the guest arrives, he proudly assumes a place of honor at the table. Jesus says that since the host may have invited people who are more famous or more celebrated, the guest, who, upon arrival, has assumed a place of honor, may be asked to move to a lesser seat . . . !
