42 - 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The challenge for each one of us today is to identify how we reflect each of the traits of the characters in this story! First, there are the Scribes and Pharisees, who are the religious leaders of the Jews. They are careful to observe the letter of the law, down to its finest details. They look down upon those who sin openly as the outcasts of their society, and they will not associate with them. However, on the inside, the Scribes and Pharisees are full of false pride and arrogance! Next, there is the youngest son who wants to break loose from the responsibilities to his family. He wants to leave home to be his own man and do his own thing. He wants to live life his way and live it with gusto! He wants to taste all the pleasures of the world and not miss out on anything. Then, there is the older brother, who has been faithful to fulfill his duties to his father. He has played by the rules, but on the inside, anger, jealousy, and resentment are revealed in his actions. Finally, there is the father, who has provided a good home for both of his sons. While loving the older son just as much, the merciful Father welcomes his prodigal son home with open arms of mercy and forgiveness!
