43 - 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today, Jesus says: “No servant can serve two masters for either He will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other!” Then, Jesus makes a very unmistakably clear statement. He says: “You cannot serve God and mammon!”
Now, mammon is a Semitic word for money, riches, or possessions.
To illustrate that one cannot serve God and riches, Jesus uses the parable of the unjust or dishonest steward. Jesus commends the shrewdness of the evil steward. At least, the evil steward understands the ways of the world and knows how to get along in the world.
Jesus says that the children of the world are more prudent than the sons of light in dealing with their own generation. The application is that by the Cross of Christ, we trust in the mercy of God, our Master, to blot out our sins. We also use the transitory things, those things which pass away, and invest them into those things that will not pass away. One cannot be sold out exclusively to financial gain, and, at the same time, be sold out to Spiritual realities.
