In this parable, Jesus suggests that in God’s eyes, how one treats the poor is more important than ones birthright. Maybe it is because the poor often model the humility and other virtues found in the Beatitudes. Often, they have a relationship with God that is dependent upon His aid. In fact, in today’s story, the name of the poor man, Lazarus, is actually the Greek form of Eliezer, which means “my God helps.” So, Lazarus name was a testimony to his relationship with God. In this story, the rich man seems to be distracted by his senses. He is clothed in purple and fine linen that drapes graciously and feels luxurious to the touch. Every day, the rich man feasts sumptuously, while, at his gate, a hungry man lies covered with ulcerous sores. The man is so hungry that he would love to just have the crumbs, which fall from the rich man’s table . . . .
