46 - 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Ten lepers shout to Jesus from afar. “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us! These lepers were outcasts of society, who, because of their contagious disease, have been driven out of the community. We read in the Old Testament book of Leviticus that lepers would dwell apart from everyone else, making their abode outside the camp. They would keep their garments rent and their heads bare, and when anyone approached the camp, they would cry out, “Unclean, unclean!”
These lepers are separated from their family and friends, and just like the lepers in the Old Testament, they are experiencing a very lonely and miserable existence. The reason they raise their voices is because, by law, they cannot even get close enough to converse quietly with anyone except other lepers.
Jesus answers them, saying: Go! Show yourselves to the priest! These lepers are desperate, and they are willing to try anything, so, they set off to show themselves to the priest! At some point along their journey, they are healed!
This story emphasizes that only one of the ten lepers returns to give thanks to Jesus for healing him. The question remains, “Where are the other nine?”
