47 - 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
This important parable makes its point both powerfully and humorously! The widow is looking at coming before a judge who neither fears the Lord nor shows respect for any human being. As the widow continues to come before the judge over and over again, she pleads,
“Render a just decision for me against my adversary!” Now, for a long time the judge is not willing to do anything, except to try to ignore the woman!
However, the widow keeps coming back, not just once, but many times, to repeat to the judge the same request, again and again. As she builds her willpower, the widow becomes stronger and stronger! Because of having to face this persistent widow and her stubborn will, the judge finds that his perseverance is severely tested. The judge becomes unnerved as this woman comes back at him again and again! Fear sets in and inhabits his thinking!
At this point, Jesus injects some humor into the story, saying that the judge concludes, “While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me, I shall deliver a just decision for her, lest she finally come and strike me!
