51 - 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

In our Gospel reading today, we find Jesus teaching not only the disciples but all the people who are following Him. They are admiring the grand majesty of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. The Jews viewed the Temple as a symbol of their national identity and the center of their religious authority. Jesus tells His followers, however, that this symbol of Jewish power and authority . . . is about to topple. Jesus is teaching them not to put their hopes in the things of this world or to be awed by the grand architecture of the Temple, for these things are “temporary”! Jesus conveys to them that a time will come when the Temple will be utterly destroyed; all of it will be completely torn down! He says, “Not one stone will be left upon another.” The lesson Jesus is teaching us here is that we cannot place our hope in the institution and wealth of this world; for, one day, “The Great Day of the Lord,” these things will all pass away!
