52 - 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Christ the King)
Today, we come to celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. A solemnity is the highest rank of liturgical celebrations: a very great feast of public communal worship! We celebrate Christ the King because of the person and work of Jesus Christ!
In the trial of Jesus, when Pontius Pilate, the Roman judge, asked Jesus if he was the King of the Jews, Jesus replied: “My kingdom does not belong to this world, for ‘this’ I was born and for ‘this’ I came into the world, to testify to the Truth (John 18:33, 36-37).
In today’s reading, we observe that in spite of the straightforward testimony of Jesus, Pilate, in mockery, places an inscription above Jesus’ head, saying: “This is the ‘king of the Jews’!” His purpose is to identify Jesus as the one (claiming to be the Son of God) whom the angry mob has sentenced to death.
