A48 - 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Reading Format)
Have you ever been asked a trick question? In today’s Gospel reading, we find skeptical individuals, trying to trap Jesus! They are trying to see whether Jesus will say anything that could possibly be perceived as revolutionary or antigovernment.
Many times, we have seen Jesus using parables to challenge the prejudiced minds and the status quo of the Jewish religious establishment. He wants them to think for themselves, concerning their worldview. He wants them to investigate their direction in the light of Old Testament prophecies. He wants them to establish their own beliefs, and not just automatically agree with what they have been taught in the past.
Jesus wants them to avoid the self-destructive course that will lead to a national collapse in the future; a national collapse that actually did occur 70 years after His death!
The result of the clear warning from Jesus in the story of the wedding feast is that the same Pharisees now try to trap Jesus with His own words.
