A6 - The Epiphany of the Lord (Reading Format)

When the Magi finally find the Christ Child, they are in awe. As a sign of humility and adoration, they prostrate themselves before Him with their foreheads touching the ground. Upon their first glimpse of Christ the King, the Magi fall down and worship Him! They present to Him their finest gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh! What did these valuable gifts signify? Gold was a gift of high honor, usually given to a king. This gift symbolized the fact that the Christ Child was, indeed, a King who was worthy to be worshiped and adored! Frankincense was incense, a reminder of spiritual things. Incense was symbolic of prayer rising to God (Psalm 141:2). Myrrh was a burial spice which signified that the New King had come to die for all mankind. Each of these gifts was a foretaste of Who this Child was and Who He would become!
