B10 - 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Reading Format)

On the Sabbath, Jesus is teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.  Jesus teaches with authority, making Him stand out head and shoulders above the Scribes.  The Scribes know God only through the rigorous laws of the Jewish tradition.  Jesus is making the Law come alive because of the authority He has as the Son of God.   His teaching has also attracted attention of another kind.  As Jesus is teaching, the unclean spirit of a man speaks loudly to Him!  The demon asks two questions: “What have you to do with us?” “Have you come to destroy us?” The unclean spirit recognizes Jesus as the Holy One of God!

Jesus rebukes the unclean spirit, saying: “Be quiet! Come out of him!”  Luke’s Gospel (chapter 4) says: “The demon then threw the man down in front of them and came out of him, without doing any harm (vs. 35).  The eye witnesses are amazed to see the authority and power of Jesus!  They say, “He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him” (Mark 1:27).
